The Consortium of Universities expresses its utmost concern for the ecological disaster generated by the oil spill that occurred as part of the operations that the company REPSOL carries out in the refinery "La Pampilla". The spill has seriously affected part of our coastline and will have medium and long term consequences on the marine ecosystem, as well as on the lives of thousands of people.

As universities committed to sustainable human development, we urge the public and private bodies responsible for this ecological emergency to take action and apply the corresponding sanctions immediately. We also consider it essential to take urgent measures to mitigate the socio-environmental impacts generated and, at the same time, to redouble efforts to design -with the highest standards- remediation, containment and compensation actions that guarantee the care of the affected areas and populations.

The universities that make up the Consortium reiterate our commitment to make our teams of researchers and technological resources available to the corresponding bodies, as well as our willingness to continue to coordinate efforts in the fields of training, knowledge management and links with the environment so that disasters such as this one do not happen again in any part of our national territory.
